{"id":12,"date":"2015-09-09T14:31:03","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T18:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/perualive.ualberta.ca\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2016-05-05T17:46:37","modified_gmt":"2016-05-05T21:46:37","slug":"history-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/perualive.ualberta.ca\/index.php\/history-2\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Earliest Civilizations:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peru is a very old country!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People have been living in Peru for more than 13,000 years!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Archeologists have found hunting tools dating back to 11,000 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peru was ruled by many different ancient civilizations. Ancient means old, and Civilizations means very big communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nazca and Tiwanaku are two examples of civilizations that lived in Peru<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They planted corn and cotton, and domesticated llamas. Domesticated means tamed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They created farming societies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The oldest known city in the Americas is Caral.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Inca Empire\/Pre-Columbian America:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Incas started as a small civilization in the Cuzco Valley, in the Andes region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They conquered other parts of Peru. After some time they controlled almost all of Peru!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Inca empire ruled the region of Peru from 1428 to 1532. Thats over 100 years!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their main language was Quechua. It is pronounced \u201ckeh-choo-ah\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People in Peru still speak Quechua.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Incas built advanced societies and created intricate architecture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can visit their greatest creation, Machu Picchu, in the Andes Mountains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They built stonewalls that were very beautiful and strong. They continued to capture the rest of the Inca empire.<\/li>\n<li>In 1535, Pizarro established a new city, Lima.<\/li>\n<li>Lima is now the capital of Peru.<\/li>\n<li>The Incan Natives wanted control of Peru back so they fought with the invading Spanish<\/li>\n<li>By 1572, all of Peru was controlled by Spanish colonies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Independence:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 1700s people in Peru were unhappy with Spanish rulers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>General Jose de San Martin led an army of 3,000 men and conquered Lima in 1820.<\/li>\n<li>General Martin declared independence from Spanish rule on July 28, 1821.<\/li>\n<li>The people of Peru celebrate Independence day every year on this day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>1900- Today:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the years, many different groups fought over Peru so the economy suffered. Economy means marketplace<\/li>\n<li>Finally in 1992, Alberto Fujimori was elected president of Peru and helped Peru get back on its feet.<\/li>\n<li>Today, Peru\u2019s economy is growing and poverty is decreasing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Government:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Peru is a constitutional republic. This means a president is elected by citizens every five years.<\/li>\n<li>The president is the head of state. The current president is Ollanta Humala. He was elected in 2011.<\/li>\n<li>The president chooses a prime minister, who right now is Pedro Cateriano,<\/li>\n<li>The president also chooses his council of ministers.\n<ul>\n<li>They are part of the executive government.<\/li>\n<li>The executive government makes sure the law is being followed.<\/li>\n<li>Only the president has executive powers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>130 congress members are elected every five years.
